My Impressions:Pros:Lifetime
warranty on the billet aluminum wheels.
Wheels are powder-coated
to match my sled.
Billets Wheels are lighter than 8"
plastic wheels.
Wheels are radiused to prevent track wear and snow
build up.
8" rear
idler wheels minimize the turning radius, creating
less
wheel resistance.
Less wheel resistance
creates an immediate 5 HP gain at the track.Composite wheel is stronger and lighter then oem wheel.
Freedom Axle is made of strong, durable, but light aluminum material.
Serious bling!!!!!!!!!!!
Cons:None
Bottom Line:In the middle of doing my 09 Ski-Doo MXZ Renegade X 800 R sled build project I noticed that the suspension was needing a face lift. I needed something in my suspension that would make it look as good as the rest of the sled.
There are a few companies out there that make Billet Wheels for the snowmobile crowd, but none that match the work of Mountain Machine out of Thompson Falls, Montana. The owner of Mountain Machine (Maria Morton) set down with me and asked me what I was looking to do to my sled. I told her what I wanted and she told me what I needed, just like that, eh.
After much deliberation we chose the stock size wheels for up front, but we went with custom built 8" wheels for the rear. We changed the rear idler wheel out for a 8" composite wheel, and married the rear components with a Mountain Machine Freedom Axle. This axle would allow for the offset needed to let the 8" wheels work on my suspension. As you can see in the pictures above this is one sweet set up, and is some major bling!
When I started out looking for bling, I did not expect to get an education as well, but Maria & Ben proceeded to give me a lesson on snowmobile track dynamics and how it works. We all know that Engine HP is not equal to Track HP, or HP to the ground. I think in terms of the amount of parasitic loss, from all the rolling mass between the engine and the drive train. She explained to me that when you change the turning radius of the track by adding larger wheels on the rear, you also create less wheel resistance. This results in an immediate increase in track horse power, to the tune of 5 to 7 HP, and that is big in my books. So the larger the wheels in the rear the more HP gain.
It was also pointed out to me by Ben from Mountain Machine, that their wheels were radius cut. This is to prevent undo track wear, and to help prevent ice & snow build up in the wheels.
One of the cool things with dealing with Mountain Machine is the fact that they are a family owned business, and they care about their customers. Chances are when you call you will be chatting with a person that has a very broad back ground in the industry, also someone with a ton of seat time using the products that they build and sell everyday.
They back all this up with a lifetime warranty on their products, and that is hard to beat.
The bottom line is, if you want to add some serious bling to your sled, have something different from everybody else, and make more horse power, then you need to check out what Mountain Machine can do for your sled. Just don't order my wheels, because they were made for my sled, and don't worry they have a ton of styles to choose from
