We have decided to review one of the gauge kits offered by Diesel Manor. The reason for getting the kit from Diesel Manor instead of directly from ISSPro or an ISSPro vendor, is that Diesel Manor’s kits include everything you need (other than tools) to install them. The instructions were very detailed, taking all of the guess work out of the installation. The instructions lay out exactly how you need to hook them up with wire color, wire locations, and pictures. If we ordered all of the parts separately, we would have had to figure out how and where to tap into the turbo boost, exhaust manifold, and transmission. We would also have had to figure out exactly what parts to order.
The three gauges included in the kit are EGT (Exhaust Gas Temp), turbo boost, and transmission temp. The EGT gauge is the most important of the three. If you let your EGT get too high, you could cause serious internal engine damage resulting in extremely expensive repairs. The second most important is the transmission temperature gauge; if you don’t know how hot the transmission oil is, then you could be burning up your transmission without even knowing it. The third gauge is the least important of the three, but you can use it for trouble shooting or to help you improve your fuel mileage. The less boost that you are running, the better fuel economy; unless there is something wrong with your turbo system and that will show up as lack of boost when you step on the pedal. If you are using or plan to use a chip or tuner, or if you are towing heavy loads even without modifications, you need to be able to see that important temp in the exhaust before the turbo and the temp of the transmission.
Installation took me about 1.5 hours and that is with painting the A-pillar pod to match. Here is a link to the installation instructions Install Sheets. Normally, ATVPT does a full installation with pictures, but in this case, Diesel Manor definitely has it covered. I did not have to make any trips to the hardware store to pick up missing parts because the kit came with all the primary wire, connectors and fasteners. There were some specialty tools that were needed for install like the NPT tap. If you would like, you can even order the tap and drill bit from Diesel Manor. I also picked up some interior matched paint locally, but in retrospect, I should have just ordered it from Diesel Manor to go with the rest of the kit. I chose the black dial, black bezel, red pointer with green backlight in order to keep things looking factory and the pod does look like a factory installed part. In order to have even light throughout the gauge face, it was necessary for ISSPro to have an external box to convert the signal from the temperature probes into something that the needle on the gauge could read. These amplifier boxes are a little inconvenient to install, but overall installation was fairly simple.
I am impressed with the quality of the ISSPro gauges that come in the kit. The lights are matched to the factory dash colors and when hooked up properly, they dim with the truck’s factory dimmer. The gauge readings are within a reasonable range for the application. For example, with my factory turbo, I will never get more than 25 to 29 lbs of boost; the gauge goes up to 30 lbs of boost. Higher boost gauges are available upon ordering if you are planning on getting or if you have an after market turbo capable of higher boost numbers. The EGT (Exhaust Gas Temp) has green, yellow, and red sections showing that you are within safe or unsafe operating temperatures and the maximum range is reasonable (you should never let your temperatures get to the maximum as serious damage will result). The transmission temp gauge is easily read with the high visibility face and the instructions included with the kit explain what normal operating temperatures are for the application (towing, racing, etc…).
