Engine Tech XP Thermostat Housing

Engine Tech Facts:

Skidoo has done a good job meeting the emission laws and at a cost to the consumer.  In order to achieve this, they made the engine run hot to burn all the fuel before exiting the engine. The XP has many safe faults to cover it from self destructing, like retarding timing at 140deg, and also at 165deg, and also a det censer. The stock thermostat does not close the bypass flow until about 150-155 deg. That is one of the reasons it runs hot especially after doing mods.

In testing the stock thermostat, Engine Tech found under normal use not hard riding, it seems to be ok. Riding it hard across a lake or mountain riding, like climbing long wide open pulls, they get hot !! Really noticed with engine mods. If you notice heat fade, you have hit 140 deg engine temp and has started to retard timing, costing you HP up to 10hp even more.

The Engine Tech housing is a completely redesigned thermostat housing and cover made from billet 6061 T6 aluminum. It uses a 05 HO 800 Thermostat . The reason Engine Tech went with a thermostat is to be able to get the engine to operating temperature, to avoided cold seizures. The XP Engine should run in the 120 deg mark, where it should for a strong running 2 stroke engine. There will not be any engine fade or loss in power.

With the new Engine-Tech Billet thermostat, the bypass is closed completely at 120 deg, which will retain up to 10 available hp.

Note: Requires a BRP thermostat, BRP Part # 420 922 519

Comparison of OEM & Engine Tech Thermostat Housings

Recommended Thermostat Modification

Art from Engine-Tech recommends drilling two 1/8" holes in your new thermostat to promote better water flow, because of the new smaller thermostat.
Note the location of the drilled holes.

Installation:

Remove right hand side panel.
Remove muffler.

Remove the panel between the muffler and the engine.

I always try to take a didital picture of the oem components so I will have a visual reference for when I go to put whatever i have been working on back together.
Note the position of the wires, cables, etc.

Remove your oem thermostat housing.
Now is a good time to spray off the antifreeze that was spilled.
Note: If you spray off the antifreeze, make sure you plug a rag in the exhaust so you don't get any water in your engine.

Install the Engine-tech thermostat housing with your new thermostat installed.
Tighten the clamps to spec.
Reinstall the house bracket and throttle cable, wires, and zip tie everything so they are secure.

Fill up your tank with the proper mix of antifreeze.
Check for leaks.
Now you can put everything back together and then fire up your engine and check for leaks, or you can install your muffler, and fire up your engine and check for leaks.
I was confident, and reinstalled everything, and then started up my engine and let it run for awhile to see if we sprung any leaks.
No leaks here!
Recheck your antifreeze level to see if you are at the correct level, and you are ready to ride.

My Impressions:

Pros:
Billet aluminum construction.
Two piece construction allows you to replace your thermostat if you have a failure.
Rugged build with great aesthetics.

Cons:
None.

Bottom Line:
If you are running a Ski-Doo with the 800R engine, you will loose power if you run it hard. That is just the way this engine comes from the factory so it will pass emissions.
As the engine gets hotter the timing will retard, and you will lose valuable horse power.

The engine will develop maximum horse power when the engine is running at 120 degrees Fahrenheit. The Engine-Tech Thermostat Housing with the new thermostat will allow your engine to run at it's peak operating temperature of 120 degrees.

Warning: If you run without a thermostat, you will run the risk of having a cold seizure of the engine. With the correct thermostat installed, your engine will get to the optimum running temperature when you warm up your sled.

If Ski-Doo had this type of thermostat housing we could simply change to the correct thermostat, but this is not the case. Their housing and thermostat are a sealed unit.

Bottom line is if you want to have your engine run at it's peak engine temperature, and maintain all it's useable horse power, you need to check out what Engine-Tech has for your Ski-Doo 800R Engine.

My machine was sitting idling for ten minutes in 42 degree Fahrenheit weather and run only 4 bars. You can't beat that!
