My First impressions:
I spent a lot of time just doing a walk around checking out the fit and finish of the BRP Outlander 800 XT. It looks like BRP has raised the bar when it comes to ATV development of new technology, with all its new features it now provides. It looks like the other ATV Manufacturers will be playing catch up for some time to come. It appears that BRP has done it's home work and in the process has maybe provided what the ATV consumer has been asking for. We are looking at a long list of niceties like,DESS, Fuel Injection, Tachometer, Inboard Hydraulic Disc Brakes, Trailing Arm Suspension, XT Package with 2500 LB Warn Winch and Hand Guards, just to start with.
The first thing I did when I got home was of course, (read the manual), right. We went for a drive around my track and through my trails in the woods. I am amazed at how this incredible engine responds, with it's fuel injected 80 degree V-Twin growling to attention when called upon. I have the shock settings at their softest setting to start out for the duration of the break in period. Yes, we are going to hold back and break it in! After riding the SRA machines, this IRS machine feels like I am riding a lazy boy with a turbine engine. I am very quickly getting spoiled with this comfort. It's power is so fluid you don't even notice you have that warn winch parked up front, patiently waiting for you to get this beast stuck.
Over the next 6 months we will be providing you with a comprehensive field test, to let you know that the BRP-Bombardier 800 XT Outlander is truly the ATV King this year.
Digital Multi Function Gauge
The new multi function gauge is digital and analog both.
The analog speedometer shows the speed and the digital display can be easily changed to show, Speed, tach, odometer, trip meter, or hour meter. It can also be programmed to display a personalized message to the owner/operator.
DESS stands for Digitally Encoded Security System it basically is a fingerprint to your machine. The ignition key contains an electronic circuit that gives it a unique electronic serial number. This and only this key can start and be used on your machine. Now can a criminal bypass the ignition key and get your machine started I am sure, anything is possible but this system does make it more difficult.

The only 80° V-twin EFI. Twin fuel injectors deliver precise amounts of fuel into the combustion chamber for powerful yet well-mannered performance.
No matter what temperature or altitude, the 800 H.O. EFI starts easily and runs aggressively.
The back wheels of most independent suspension equipped ATV's move in a “butterfly” motion, forcing the wheels to travel sideways. This in-and-out motion can diminish handling and traction, and creates up to ten times more tire wear.
The TTI design, with single pivots positioned ahead of the wheels on a torsion bar, allows the wheels to travel straight up and down, delivering constant, straightforward travel and better overall handling.

There are two
front disc brakes, and one disc brake in the rear. The front brakes are
positioned on either side of the front differential, and the rear brake is
positioned next to the rear differential. They are mounted inward to provide
better protection, and the pads can easily be accessed and changed.

Note: I am told that the Can-Am R&D Team is working on this area to rectify this problem.
2: Over the course of a year I also had numerous error lights show up, but they didn't effect the drive-ability of the machine. A quick trip to the shop eliminated those annoyances.

Bottom Line |

We have enjoyed having this 2006 model Can-Am Outlander 800XT ( formerly BRP ) on a long term review and field test here at ATVPT. I cannot begin to tell you how much of a grin you get on your face when you drive this ATV. After over a year in service with us I still get that same wicked grin every time I drive this ATV.
Your ride experience begins the moment you set on this ultra plush seat. Turn on the key and you are greeted with a personal welcome message from the atv's digital gage cluster ( your dealer can program this in for you). Hit the start button and this ATV starts and runs like a Swiss watch on steroids. I kind off think it sounds like a Duccati, but that's my personal thoughts. Put it in gear, punch the throttle, and you feel the power coming on like a locomotive. I have hauled everything throughout the review period with this quad, and never had a problem with power to tow anything that we have attached behind it. The 4 wheel drive system is outstanding and will get you through areas that you would be leery of on other quads. The suspension needs to be set at it's firmest setting on the front end, with the rear at its plushest setting. This will give you a very satisfactory ride. Remember this is a utility quad and not a race vehicle. If you want a better handling machine you can remove a bunch of weight off of the front end, starting with the front bumper & winch (or just take a look at the Renegade). Just remember doing this is taking away from what this ATV is designed to do. Brakes are more then adequate. They work great and they will stop you. I still have a hard time getting used to driving a quad that has only one brake lever on the handle bars. To some people this is no big deal, but I just had a bit of a struggle adjusting to this set up. When I received this ATV for long term review, I decided to approach the review the same way I would with any new machine that I already owned. I decided to add to this review by trying an assortment of Can-Am, plus other aftermarket accessories to the machine to personalize it a bit. This platform readily accepted every add on, modification and dressing that we could fit on it, and wore it well. Bottom Line: In my opinion I think this is the top utility quad on the market for 2006. Sure we had some issue's, but none strong enough to deter me from purchasing this ATV. If you want the biggest, baddest, most comfortable utility ATV available today, then you should take a very close look at the Can-Am Outlander 800XT.
